If all the views and opinions of California voters were rolled up into a single human being, that person would be a huge jerk.

Or at least the worst neighbor ever.

Witness the latest poll from PPIC on taxes and education. Big majorities of voters see the public schools as suffering in the budget, and are worried about the quality of schools. They want something done.

They just don’t want to be the one to do it. Income taxes on people richer than the voters are fine. But sales taxes or income taxes paid by the voters themselves are not.

The message is clear: the schools are a problem. But they aren’t my problem.

That won’t do. Still, the politicians, media, interest group and campaigns suck up to voters, for obvious reasons.

But the voters are a neighbor who needs a good scolding – and maybe an intervention.
