Banished Moderate Update: Why Didn't Parra Stay Bought?

In the coverage of how Assemblywoman Nicole Parra was kicked out of the Capitol (she is now the only one of California's 120 legislators without an office of the building) for the crime of abstaining on a meaningless budget vote because a water bond was not attached, I was struck by this quote from Parra's Democratic Assembly colleague Patty Berg (D-Eureka). It speaks volumes about the mindset of legislators here. And for those who want to know why Californians favor direct democracy over legislative action, it should give you a sense of why we Golden State voters choose the ballot over our lawmakers.

From this Sacramento Bee Story:

"We have spent millions of dollars ensuring that Nicole comes back three times in a row. The way it's done here is that if you are in the majority party, and you are a Democrat, you vote on the budget."

I put the first sentence in bold. Think about it. Yes, Parra is in one of the few competitive legislative districts in California. (Almost every single member of the legislature, Republican and Democrat, is protected by a bipartisan gerrymander enacted in 2001). And yes, the party and her colleagues helped raise money for all three of her competitive races. (She's termed out this fall after three, two-year terms).

So these legislators assume that her loyalty should be to them and the party on a vote (even a symbolic one on a budget proposal that had no hope of passing). Not to the state, which needs water infrastructure. Not to her constituents in her Central Valley district, which has big agricultural interests and big water needs. And certainly not to her conscience or sense of right and wrong. Berg's message is: we bought Parra's election. She must stay bought.

Perhaps some legislators need to be kicked out of the Capitol. But Nicole Parra isn't one of them.

Central Valley Voters

Considering the small percentage of voters who actually vote, if ALL of the Central Valley voters actually voted, they could become a major voting block. Part of the problem is that we simply dont vote.

It's time for voter reform!

Granted redistricting will help get rid of some "dead wood" but the real problem is voter reform. Why are the droves receiving government subsidies allowed to vote? If you do not have a vested interest in your city, county, state or country you should not be allowed to vote period! If we continue to allow the droves with their hand out for welfare, WIC, food stamps, etc., they will continue to elect "tax and giveaway" types like Perata and Pelossi!

Indignation

The Speaker of the Assembly has not punished Nicole Parra, she has punished the Central Valley and its people. We elected Nicole Parra, not the Speaker of the Assembly and by banishing our representative you have banished the people from their capitol, how dare you. There will be a backlash.

Ashamed

I'm a baby boomer and I'm absolutely ashamed that my generation is the one that is causing the demise of our republic. I hope all of you know that there are some baby boomers who have read and understand the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution! (But then again, I didn't take any drugs like so many of the baby boomers did!) A distraught baby boomer

Redistricting reforn is urgently needed

The mindset of the majority party in the legislature borders on a collective dictatorship. Berg's comment shows that it's all about what serves their individual interests and political power, and not the people of California. The immediate way to begin correcting this problem is to create competitive legislative districts. Politics may be the art of negotiation, but this shows there are precious few at the Capitol who understand this.

Calif. Ledg.

They all need to be thrown out with the bath water. At least wait untill the baby boomers have died off. Then you can deal with the nincomepoops that our lazy school systems have produced. What I wouldn't give to see the '50s come back.

Joe is correct

Joe, you're telling it like it is. Refreshing that there's some independence being exercised for a change.
