SF Giants: The Republicans’ Secret Weapon?

Congratulations to the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants!

Perhaps the Giants victory signifies the beginning of the turnaround for California. After all, California finally beat Texas. One can only hope.

But is the Giants victory also a way for another underdog, Meg Whitman, to pull off an upset win in her version of a World Series?

Here’s the theory. With the Giants capturing the World Series, Giants fans in San Francisco and environs go into joyous celebration. Being San Francisco, the partying lasts through the night. Groggy, many citizens of the City by the Bay barely make it to work and struggle through the day. One thing they don’t do is vote!

With voting in the Democratic stronghold suppressed, Whitman and her fellow Republicans pull ahead in the voting.

Keep your eye on those San Francisco returns.

Perhaps wishful thinking for Republicans, but some have suggested Democratic voter turnout might fall off when results from the East indicate a Republican take-over of Congress. This Giants celebration theory falls into the same Machiavellian thinking.

Despite the enthusiastic responses all the major candidates received at rallies over the weekend through yesterday, you get a real sense that the general voter is so ready for this election to be over. In addressing a large crowd of a few hundred Saturday on my mystery novel at a writer’s conference, when I mentioned the good news the election was almost over there was a great cheer.

Indications are voters are eager for the ads and the campaign rhetoric to disappear so they can get back to their lives. The question is, how many voters will cap off this campaign season and actually vote. The Field Poll predicts a turnout of 55-percent.

Turnout is a key to who wins and who loses. We’ll know the answers before too long. Thank goodness it’s almost over.
